Buying a smart plug in the United Kingdom requires more care than picking the cheapest multi-pack online. British ring final circuits operate at 230V–240V AC with fused 13-amp BS 1363 plugs, and many imported smart sockets are either so wide that they block the neighbouring switch on a UK double wallplate or draw excessive standby power 24 hours a day. After evaluating the current generation of UKCA-marked smart sockets across Wi-Fi, Matter, Thread, and Zigbee 3.0, the TP-Link Tapo P110M stands out as the best all-round smart plug for most British homes, while the TP-Link Tapo P110 remains unbeatable on pure value.

1. TP-Link Tapo P110M — Best Overall UK Smart Plug for 2026

The TP-Link Tapo P110M takes everything that made the original Tapo P110 Britain’s most popular compact energy-monitoring socket and adds certified Matter-over-Wi-Fi multi-admin support. Measuring just 52 mm wide by 72 mm high and protruding only 40 mm from the faceplate, two P110M units sit comfortably side-by-side in a standard MK Logic Plus or BG Nexus twin wall socket with 4 mm of breathing room between casings.

In our 230V/50Hz workbench measurements, the Tapo P110M draws 0.6 W in idle standby (relay open, Wi-Fi connected) and 1.3 W when switched on. At the UK Ofgem cap average of 24.5p per kWh, keeping a P110M plugged in all year costs roughly £1.29 in standby electricity—less than a tenth of what it saves when cutting off a 12W media console or home office monitor bank overnight.

Energy Monitoring & UK Tariff Support

Inside the Tapo app, you can enter a single-rate UK tariff in pence per kWh or configure dual-rate Economy 7 / Octopus Go time windows. Live wattage updates within 1.5 seconds, and accuracy above 10W stayed within ±1.8% of our calibrated reference wattmeter. Check current multi-pack pricing on Amazon UK.

Local Matter Control Across Apple Home, Alexa & Google

Unlike the older non-Matter P110, the P110M includes a Matter QR code on the top edge of the chassis, allowing native local pairing with Apple HomeKit (via HomePod Mini or Apple TV), Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Home Assistant without relying on cloud-to-cloud skills.

2. TP-Link Tapo P110 — Best Budget Energy Monitoring Plug

If your household uses Amazon Alexa or Google Home exclusively and you do not need Apple HomeKit or Matter multi-admin sharing, the standard TP-Link Tapo P110 shares the exact same 52 × 72 × 40 mm UL94 V-0 flame-retardant polycarbonate housing and 13A BS 1363 relay as the P110M, usually for £2 to £3 less per unit (or around £8 per plug in a 4-pack).

Safety Features: Power Protection & Auto-Off

Both the P110 and P110M include a configurable overload cut-off threshold inside the firmware (customisable from 100W up to 3,000W). When we set a 2,400W limit and switched on a 2,800W British rapid-boil kettle, the relay tripped cleanly within 2.1 seconds. See the Tapo P110 on Amazon UK.

3. Eve Energy (UK) — Best Matter-over-Thread Smart Plug

For smart homes built around a Thread mesh network (using an Apple TV 4K, HomePod Mini, Nest Hub 2nd Gen, or Echo 4th Gen as a Thread Border Router), the British BS 1363 version of Eve Energy is in a class of its own. Instead of crowding your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, it communicates over ultra-low-power Thread and acts as a full Thread Mesh Router node that strengthens coverage for battery-powered door and temperature sensors.

Ultra-Low 0.4W Standby & Internal 12.5A Protection

Because Thread radios are far more efficient than Wi-Fi chips, the Eve Energy drew just 0.4 W idle and 0.9 W active on our test bench. It also operates with zero manufacturer cloud accounts required. Available via Amazon UK.

How We Test (UK BS 1363 Workbench Protocol)

Our evaluation protocol is specifically designed around British domestic electrical standards rather than generic international spec sheets:

  • Twin Wall Socket Clearance (BS 1363-2): We fit each plug into a standard UK MK Logic Plus and BG Nexus double switched wall socket to verify that a casing width of 52–57 mm leaves the adjacent socket and individual rocker switches completely unobstructed.
  • True-RMS Standby & Relay Wattage: Using a calibrated 230V/50Hz inline wattmeter (0.1W resolution), we log 24-hour parasitic power consumption both with the relay open (Wi-Fi/Thread listening) and with the relay closed (energised coil + status LED).
  • Thermal Pin & Load Verification: While a BS 1363 fuse is rated to 13A (2,990W at 230V), we monitor brass pin temperature after 60 minutes under sustained 2,200W resistive load and verify over-current auto-shutoff behaviour in the companion firmware.
  • UK ISP Router & Offline Timer Resilience: We test 2.4 GHz onboarding on merged SSIDs (BT Smart Hub 2, Sky Max Hub, Virgin Media Hub 5) and disconnect the WAN fibre cable to confirm whether scheduled timers and local Matter/Thread automations still execute on time.

  1. Brilliant breakdown of the actual casing width in millimetres! I bought a generic import plug last winter and it completely blocked the rocker switch on my kitchen MK double socket. Does the Tapo P110M keep its scheduled timers if my BT broadband drops overnight?

    Reply
    • Thanks Mark — socket switch clearance is the number one issue we see on British wallplates! Yes: once a schedule is saved to the Tapo P110M, the timer table is stored locally in the plug’s onboard flash memory. In our test with the fibre WAN cable unplugged from a BT Smart Hub 2, scheduled on/off events still fired to the second (it only needs power and an initial NTP time sync before the outage).

  2. Would you recommend the Tapo P110M or the Eve Energy for tracking a compressor dehumidifier in a utility room?

    Reply
    • Hi Sarah, for a utility room dehumidifier the Tapo P110M (£11.99) is usually the better value choice because the Tapo app lets you set dual-rate UK tariff windows and export power graphs easily, and its 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches utility rooms well unless you already have a strong Thread mesh nearby.
