How to Use the UK Appliance Running-Cost Calculator

Every domestic electrical appliance in the United Kingdom operates on a nominal 230V / 50Hz AC supply protected by a BS 1363 3-pin plug and a BS 1362 cartridge fuse (3A, 5A, or 13A). To work out the exact cost in pence or pounds per hour:

  1. Check the wattage rating plate on your appliance—or plug it into an energy-monitoring smart socket such as the TP-Link Tapo P110M to read live active power in watts (W).
  2. Divide watts by 1,000 to convert to kilowatts (kW), then multiply by your daily hours of use to get daily kWh.
  3. Multiply kWh by your UK electricity tariff unit rate (for example, 24.5p/kWh on the Ofgem Standard Variable Price Cap, or 7.0p–8.5p/kWh during an Octopus Intelligent Go or Economy 7 overnight off-peak window).
