How We Work

How We Work

Where the information comes from

In order of priority:

  1. Manufacturer documentation: datasheets, product pages and user manuals for the exact model discussed.
  2. Official guidance: for example Electrical Safety First, Ofgem and your energy supplier’s published tariff information.
  3. Standards and regulation: for example BS 1363 for UK plugs and sockets, and the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regime for connected devices.

When a figure matters and we could not find it in one of these places, the page says so instead of guessing.

What we do not do

  • We do not run our own tests, and we never describe a result as "tested", "measured" or "verified" by us.
  • We do not invent reviewers, ratings or scores.
  • We do not quote prices as fact. Prices change daily, so we link to the retailer and tell you to check there.
  • We do not accept payment to change a recommendation.

AI assistance

Drafts are prepared with AI tools. No guide is reviewed by a qualified electrician. Specifications and safety statements are checked against the sources listed on the page.

Dates and updates

Every guide shows "Last checked". Specifications, tariffs and app screens change, so we re-check price-cap and tariff figures each quarter and other guides at least once a year. If something has changed and we have not caught it, tell us and we will fix it.

Affiliate links and advertising

See the affiliate disclosure. In short: links to Amazon UK are affiliate links, we earn from qualifying purchases, and it costs you nothing extra.

Safety first

If a safety source and a convenience tip disagree, the safety source wins. Our what not to plug into a smart plug guide is the page we update first when anything changes.
